Why Sleep Testing Matters
Symptoms can raise concern about sleep apnea, but symptoms alone cannot confirm a diagnosis. A sleep study provides objective information about what happens while you sleep, so an appropriate medical provider can determine whether obstructive sleep apnea is present.
You may want to discuss testing if you regularly experience concerns such as:
- Loud or frequent snoring
- Gasping or choking during sleep
- Breathing pauses noticed by a partner
- Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
- Morning headaches
- Difficulty concentrating
- Waking without feeling refreshed
Healthy Sleep Tulsa can help coordinate testing when appropriate. A qualified medical provider reviews the sleep study and makes the diagnosis.

How a Home Sleep Study Works
A home sleep apnea test uses portable equipment to collect information while you sleep in your usual environment. Instead of spending the night in a sleep laboratory, you follow the provided instructions and wear the monitoring equipment at home.
Depending on the prescribed testing system, the study may collect information on breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, airflow, or respiratory effort. Your medical sleep provider uses the recorded information to determine whether the test supports a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea.
Not every patient is an appropriate candidate for home testing. Your healthcare provider may recommend an in-lab sleep study instead based on your symptoms, health history, or other factors.
Home Testing Can Make
the First Step Easier
For appropriate patients, completing a sleep study at home can make testing feel less disruptive. You can sleep in your own bed and follow your normal evening routine while the equipment records the information your provider needs.
Healthy Sleep Tulsa can help patients get set up for a home study when testing is needed. We also help explain how sleep testing fits into the larger treatment process, so you know what happens after the results are reviewed.
A sleep study is not simply a formality before receiving an appliance. It establishes the medical diagnosis that guides appropriate treatment.
What Happens After
Your Sleep Study?
Once your study has been interpreted, the next step depends on the findings and your individual needs. If you are diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, your medical provider can discuss appropriate treatment pathways with you.
For qualifying adults who cannot tolerate CPAP or prefer another option, oral appliance therapy may be considered. Our doctors evaluate your teeth, bite, jaw, airway, health history, and treatment needs before recommending a custom appliance.
Some patients continue using CPAP. Others may benefit from using CPAP and an oral appliance together. Treatment should be based on your diagnosis and coordinated with the appropriate healthcare providers.
What Is Sleep Study Titration?
Titration is the process of adjusting treatment and evaluating how those changes affect your sleep apnea. With oral appliance therapy, the appliance can be gradually adjusted to support the airway while balancing treatment goals with comfort and jaw health.
Once the appliance has been adjusted appropriately, follow-up sleep testing helps assess how well treatment is working. This is an important distinction because less snoring or feeling more rested does not necessarily tell us everything about what is happening with your breathing during sleep.
We use objective testing as part of a broader follow-up process rather than relying on symptoms alone.
Why We Verify Oral
Appliance Treatment
Our goal is not simply to give you a device that feels comfortable. We want your appliance to be appropriately monitored as part of your obstructive sleep apnea care.
Follow-up testing can help your healthcare team determine whether:
- Breathing interruptions have improved
- Additional appliance adjustments may be needed
- Treatment provides adequate control of diagnosed OSA
- Further medical evaluation should be considered
Your sleep physician or another appropriate medical provider interprets your sleep test results. Our doctors can then use those results, along with your comfort and clinical findings, to guide dental appliance adjustments.
Follow-Up Continues
After Appliance Delivery
Healthy Sleep Tulsa follows oral appliance patients beyond the delivery appointment. Regular follow-up gives us opportunities to evaluate comfort, answer questions, monitor the teeth and jaw, and make adjustments when appropriate.
Our documented follow-up schedule includes:
- An in-office visit approximately two months after appliance delivery
- Titration sleep testing to evaluate treatment effectiveness
- A six-month telemedicine visit
- Yearly telemedicine follow-up
If a primary care physician or sleep physician referred you to our office, we also send follow-up communication regarding your care. This helps keep the providers involved in your treatment informed.
